Georgia driver kills passenger in fatal car accident

Our Atlanta readers would probably agree that the death of a loved one is never easy to accept. But it becomes all the more difficult when a family member is lost in a fatal accident that results from the negligence or carelessness of another person.

A Georgia man was recently the cause of a single-car accident that killed his passenger. The man was driving his car after dark when he diverged from the road and crashed into a tree. His passenger, a 25-year-old young man, died from his injuries.

The driver has been indicted by a grand jury on a charge of vehicular homicide. While holding such a defendant liable for a crime may fulfill the state's need for justice, it will do little to alleviate the losses of a victim's family.

When a family loses a loved one due to the reckless conduct of a third party, they may be able to file a civil lawsuit for wrongful death against the person who was at fault. With the assistance of a skilled personal injury attorney, plaintiffs may be eligible to recover monetary compensation for their family member's medical bills, pain and suffering, property damage and funeral costs. Additionally, a court may award a victim's family for the loss of that person's income as well as the loss of their companionship.

Courts know it is impossible to place an economic value on the life of a loved one. But they also know how important it is for families to be able to cover the costs they were forced to incur because of someone else's actions. Compensatory damages are designed to relieve this burden for the loved ones of an accident victim so that they may grieve without debt hanging over their heads.
