Families in Fulton County who make the decision to put an elderly relative into an assisted living facility are doing so under the belief that the best possible care will be provided. The last thing they're expecting is for nursing home abuse to occur. The nursing home staff is there to care for their patients, not to steal from them, abuse them or ignore them. If this happens, the family needs to be aware of it and take steps to make it stop.
Two workers at an assisted living facility have been charged with abusing an elderly patient suffering from Alzheimer's disease as well as other patients. The two workers - an 18-year-old woman and 25-year-old man - allegedly told police that they committed abusive acts on their patients because they thought it was "funny." They also videotaped the abuse. The patients abused were age 78, 89 and 71. The abuse was physical and verbal and involved a range of acts. The workers were charged with assault and battery on an elderly person and videotaping them while they were nude. The two were also fired from their jobs.
The guilt and horror a family feels when they are informed that abuse has taken place on an elderly relative who had been placed in the care of others at a nursing facility is incalculable. There are many forms of elder abuse including wrongful death, starvation, dehydration, infections, bed sores, sexual abuse and physical abuse. When there are allegations of abuse of any kind, it must be investigated completely to determine what happened. Families have the right to seek compensation from the nursing facility for the abuse their loved one was forced to endure as it could negatively influence their health and even lead to death.
In this case, two workers who had been entrusted with the care of ill, elderly people decided that they would use that as an opportunity to take videos of themselves abusing them. They were arrested and will have to face the legal consequences for their actions. The families of those who were abused would be wise to consider seeking their own form of justice by contacting an attorney experienced with cases involving elder abuse in a nursing home.
